THE APPARATUS STUDIO

Our well equipped Pilates apparatus studio is a wonderful way of experiencing the benefits of the Pilates system in full; with expertly crafted Pilates equipment that will help to support, challenge and educate you as you work through each exercise.

Our studio is equipped with Reformers, Wunda Chairs, Tower, Ladder Barrel, PediPul and other smaller apparatus and equipment. We work mostly using the Reformers, with the ability to incorporate other apparatus as needed to support class and client needs.

Our teachers are comprehensively trained in the Pilates method. We work within the framework of the traditional method, as designed by Joseph Pilates, with a supportive approach that treats each person as an individual. We will observe, support and guide you to get the most out of your practice.

A studio induction is required to join our apparatus classes. It is important to use that you can work safely on the apparatus and in a manner that will help you get the most out of the the work for your own body. Scroll down to our Getting Started Guide to find out more.

After an initial induction programme, most people will move into our group apparatus classes where you will continue to refine and progress your practice in a small group setting, expertly guided by our studio teachers. For those preferring 1:1 tuition, we may be able to offer you further 1:1 sessions on an ongoing basis subject to availability.

  • In the apparatus studio we have Reformers, a Tower, Wunda Chairs, a Ladder Barrel, Step-Barrels (“Spine Correctors”), a Pedi-Pul, mats and various smaller items of equipment. Our studio contains both Classical and Contemporary apparatus. We work mostly on the Classical apparatus, but our contemporary options offer great flexibility for clients with specific needs or preferences. All apparatus are high quality and built to accommodate the traditional work.

The Reformer is a staple of our apparatus classes and in most classes you will be on the Reformer at least some of the time. Your teacher may also move you around other pieces of apparatus in the class for certain exercises. Every piece of apparatus has it’s own feel, and it’s own things to offer! Pilates was designed to work as a system, using the different pieces of apparatus to help you evolve and grow in your practice and ability.

If you are working with us on a 1:1 basis, your teacher will determine the apparatus used based on your own individual needs and program.

  • At Be:Poised Pilates we believe in high quality teaching that is centred around the individual.

We recognise that class participants progress at different rates and have different needs.

We work closely within the framework of the traditional Pilates method. Every exercise in the classical method, and the order in which it is performed, has specific purpose. Working within this framework not only means you get an authentic Pilates experience - with the benefits this offers - but also allows you to become familiar with the exercises, understand your body and progress easily through the work. It enables each participant to evolve their practice and work at their own pace in class.

Each class is planned by the teacher to take into account the needs and experience of each attendee booked. During the class the teacher will guide you through each exercise. You will be given technical guidance and your teacher will observe you throughout the class to offer those little adjustments that make all the difference in Pilates!

Group classes can have a really lovely atmosphere. They are a great way to really take ownership of your Pilates work and can be a lot of fun too!

  • An induction is required prior to joining our group apparatus classes. This is to ensure you are familiar with the principles of the Pilates method and can work safely on the studio apparatus.

If you are relatively new to Pilates apparatus you are recommended to start with a beginner induction programme. This can be achieved by joining one of our 5 week beginner courses, or via a private 1:1 programme of at least 4 sessions.

If you are already experienced and confident in working on Pilates apparatus from another studio then a refresher induction may be a suitable option for you, comprising a single private 1:1 session.

Most people are able to move confidently into our group classes after their introductory 1:1s. However if you don't feel confident enough yet to move into a group class, or if your teacher has any concerns, we are happy to discuss options for you to continue with some extra 1:1s for a little while longer.

  • Your induction sessions are an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the studio apparatus and foundation exercises, as well as help you and your teacher get to know each other. You will have your own client notes folder that your teacher will update, so that even if you attend a class with another of our studio teachers they will already be up to speed on your individual needs and preferences. Your teacher will continue to support you during your group classes, helping you as much as needed until you feel confident.

It is completely natural if your feel a bit nervous ahead of your first group class. Don’t worry, your teacher will be on hand to help and we always keeps a special eye out for new joiners who may need a little extra help in those early weeks. Be:Poised Pilates clients are a lovely bunch so there is no need to feel self-conscious when you join a group class. We all start out as beginners.

To start with you might find yourself needing more guidance and moving at a slower pace. Give yourself the time you need to get used to the work. You will be amazed at how quickly the work begins to flow once it becomes more familiar to you.

When you are ready, your teacher will gradually adjust your programme as you become more experienced, stronger and ready for new challenges.

You will soon discover a new confidence in your abilities and in your classes. Working in the group class environment can be very empowering as it encourages you to take ownership of your workout.
