THE HISTORY

Pilates is a method of body wellness, named after the method’s creator Joseph Pilates. The method was originally named “Contrology”; working the muscles of the body under the conscious control of the mind.

In addition to creating the series of 34 mat exercises that comprise the Classical Pilates Matwork of today, Joseph Pilates also invented various apparatus that he would use in his Contrology gym to provide resistance, control and support to the body.

Joe’s method was renamed after his death to “Pilates” in honour of the man behind the method.

Today Pilates has grown in popularity and is taught across the world. It is more than the mat classes you see advertised at a local gym, or the Reformer classes that are growing in popularity. It is a full studio system that will both support and challenge you as you develop greater strength, control and mobility.

CLASSICAL PILATES

Over the years different variations on the Pilates method have been developed. From gentle mat based exercise classes to high energy, high-rep gym style classes, the term “Pilates” can now mean a wide variety of things.

Classical Pilates refers to the teaching of Pilates that works within the framework of the method that Joseph Pilates created. We teach the exercises he taught, in the order he taught them. Treating Pilates as a full system for body wellness, that incorporates the different elements on the mat and apparatus within a tried and tested methodology that has been meticulously created so that every exercise and the order in which they are performed has a purpose.

Classical Pilates teachers are trained to the highest standards. We are trained to observe the body infront of us, and apply the Pilates method in the way that will best suit that individual person’s needs.

Joe’s method became so highly respected because it worked. People felt the benefits in their body and their every day life. The longevity of the Classical Pilates method is due to the meticulous thought processes behind it that leads to demonstrable effects that you can feel in your body. It is the reason it is still taught today and will continue to be taught long after fitness trends have come and gone. It is a carefully designed method that will help you discover strengths and abilities you didn’t know you had!

BENEFITS OF PILATES

Pilates was designed for every day living. To help us move better; to walk with better posture, to get up from the floor easier, to help us live our lives with joy and vitality - not compromising our activities due to aches, pains or fatigue.

Pilates will help you to connect with your body. To understand how it moves, and to develop better control over your movement. To discover new strengths, new abilities, and to move well. In Pilates we combine strength, mobility and control in every exercise.

Some people take up Pilates for general wellness, some to help with sporting performance & recovery, some to ease aches and pains due to musculoskeletal conditions or simply the aches and pains from day to day life and repetitive activities such as lifting, carrying or even prolonged sitting.

Pilates has something for everyone, and so long as you are regular and consistent in including Pilates into your day to day life you will soon feel the benefits!
